My submission for the Weekly CG Challenge #129: The theme was “Mask”, and my first thoughts went to the quickly improvised solutions of the first world war. The history and insanity of WW1 is a great interest of mine, and it was fun to bring a bit of it to life.
I began in MakeHuman to create my character's bust, then modelled everything around him in Blender. Modelling, UV unwrapping, lighting, and rendering were all done in Blender. PBR texturing was done in Substance Painter. Finally I took the scene into Photoshop to do colour grading and compositing in extra elements like details of the engine in the far background, as well as adding some subtle dust, smoke haze, and lens flare effects.
