I recently had the opportunity to work as the VAD and Volume Op for a commercial shoot. Big shoutout to the team over at the Be Electric studio up on NYC, working with them is always a pleasure, they're so dialed in to their technology that shoots are always incredibly smooth and efficient.

As the VAD I was tasked with creating an exterior forest environment, in the style of an Autumn/Winter Utah camp clearing, overlooking mountain valleys.

Put together in just a week, I was fairly proud of the final result and the framerate achieved despite the density of detail particularly in the foreground. I used a combination of PCG for scatter assets, as well as direct foliage painting to allow me to move individual trees and rocks to give the director very tailored control over his composition. I worked closely in previs with the DP and sent reference renders across for the scenic department to help match their props to the world being designed, and did the stage operation during the shoot to help them dial the final lighting and composition on-set.

I'm immensely proud of the final result, the footage captured was absolutely gorgeous. I'm also happy I was able to guide a director through their first experience shooting on a Volume.
